Fishing teams were hyped up at the 2019 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament kickoff party, excited for the chance to fish for big marlin and win cash prizes.

Unpredictable storm conditions battered Cabo San Lucas, but that didn’t stop anglers from partying at the 21st annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament registration, kickoff party and captains’ meeting. The event kicked off Sunday evening at Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa’s indoor ballroom, instead of the rainy beachside terrace. A total of 51 teams registered in various categories, filling the beachside resort with good spirits and plenty of bravado.

Anglers, crew and participants enjoyed food, drinks, dancers and music as teams registered for the tournament. Los Cabos Billfish Tournament AFTCO merchandise was available for sale. Tournament sponsors Maui Jim, Playa Grande Resort, United Yacht Transport, JABSCO Rule and Lucas Oil Marine Products were onsite to display and sell products. Fishing-centric door prizes were awarded to lucky teams, while raffle items will be given away during the awards presentation on Thursday night, October 17, 2019.

The remnants of a storm hitting the coast caused the cancellation of day one of the tournament on Monday, October 14, 2019. The port of Cabo San Lucas was closed to boats leaving the marina. Teams still interested in entering can register for the tournament on Monday, October 14, at the official registration link, contacting Tournament Director Dan Jacobs to pick up their boat numbers and tournament gear. Call or text Dan Jacobs at 407-405-0102.

The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament will continue its dual Bimini-style shotgun start out of Marina Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San Jose del Cabo on Tuesday, October 15. This allows teams to start closer to the fishing grounds, depending on the areas they’re targeting. Anglers will have two days to fish for the many cash prizes awarded during the tournament. Daily winnings from day one will be rolled over to days two and three, as outlined in the official Los Cabos Billfish Tournament rules.

The tournament will award more than $780,000 in cash and prizes to fishing teams catching the largest marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado, as well as the top three billfish-release-points teams and daily high-point-release teams.

The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is hosted by the Los Cabos Tourism Board, and produced by Bonnier Events, in partnership with Marlin, Sport Fishing and Salt Water Sportsman magazines.
