High participation sets the stage for sizeable payouts in the 20th annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament.

With Tropical Storm Sergio safely north of Cabo San Lucas, the 20th annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament kicked off Sunday evening with final registration, kickoff party and captains’ meeting at Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa’s beachside terrace. A total of 52 teams registered in various categories, filling the beachside oasis with laughs and excitement.
Anglers, crew and participants enjoyed food, drinks, music and traditional Mexican dance entertainment all night. Los Cabos Billfish Tournament AFTCO merchandise was available for sale. Fishing-centric raffle items will be given away during the awards presentation on Thursday night, October 18.
The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament continued its dual Bimini shotgun start out of Marina Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San Jose del Cabo. This allows teams to start closer to the fishing grounds, depending on the areas they’re targeting.
A beautiful sunrise and light winds met teams as the fleet raced toward the horizon at the 7:30 a.m. The tournament saw 33 boats leave from Cabo San Lucas and 19 boats head out from San Jose del Cabo on Monday, October 15, the first day of fishing.
The tournament will award more than $642,300 in cash and prizes to fishing teams catching the largest marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado, as well as the top three billfish-release-points teams and daily high-point-release teams.
